Wednesday Captain's Prize 2019

The Wednesday Captains Prize 2019 took place on August 16thhere at Rush Golf Club. With weather worries plaguing the Wednesday Captain all week long the day had finally arrived and the usual wind-swept Rush welcome was turned up a notch for the Morning Shotgun at 10am. The morning golfers arrived bright eyed and bushy tailed as Martin greeted them and wished them all the best of luck but more importantly Martin assured the golfers the rain would stay away, and true to his word the golfers stayed dry …… until 4pm.
The afternoon golfers who teed off in the 3pm shotgun were not so convinced of the Wednesday Captains Weather forecast but he continued to assure them the rain wasn’t coming. Spirits were high, the club was buzzing and the beers were chilling, the perfect day on the Links. In true Martin Ryan style, the afternoon start was kicked off with the Wednesday Captain firing a shotgun to signal start of play.
But lurking in the cloudy sky overhead was the one thing Martin had dreaded all week…. RAIN. The downpour came and our golfers scrambled for the wet gear. As Martin watched from the dry high stool in the bar, the call had to be made. Play was suspended and the greens took the hit. The seagulls were delighted as they flocked to the ponds emerging on the greens as we all looked on in disbelief.
But never fear, the rain was no match for The Links and within 10/15 mins the course engulfed the water and we were good to resume play. Ronan Branigan and his team have ensured a fantastic golf course for us all year and they were not about to let the rain win the battle. While golfers dried off and began their back nine the sun made an appearance and all was well once again
The evenings entertainment was Stage 2 who took to the floor after the presentation. Of course the whispers of scores had circulated the bar and again the ‘what ifs’ and the ‘I threw it aways’ where in full flow. But one man came out on top and that was our Wednesday Captains Prize 2019 Winner Mr Alan Beggs with a score of 38 points. Alan is a dedicated Wednesday Golfer and a fantastic winner of this years prize.
Well done to all involved in the day and the very best of luck to the 2019/2020 Wednesday Captain Neil Burke on his year ahead. Neil announced his Vice Captain on the night for 2019/2020 would be Paul Murphy. A fantastic duo for the year ahead. The Very Best of Luck you two !!!
