Copeland copes under pressure in Wednesday Captains PRIZE

The Wednesday Captain Paul ' Rasher Murphy' began his reign in 2019 only to have the pandemic steal his thunder and cancel the majority of his first few months in charge. However the overwhelming support from the Wednesday Men has ensured the Wednesday Competition stayed on the weekly agenda when we returned to golf after many months closed.

As the wind picked up and the rain died down on Friday 6th August, the golfers were out in force for the Wednesday Captains Prize to the Men 2021. A long awaited day for our Wednesday Men, the Wednesday Captains Day is one for the calendar every year as the numbers continue to grow year in year out.

The Captains Day, originally set for August 27th, slipped into the diary between some busy weeks here at Rush but once again the day was a huge success from start to finish. 112 Golfers signed up for the day with a few cry offs early on but 104 cards returns ensure a great field.

Paddy Copeland was listed for the day as he would be on most Wednesdays and the little wind and rain was not enough to deter Paddy for playing his golf. Accompanied by Dad, Aidan Copeland, Mental Coach Joe Donnelly and Junior Convenor Cian Mc Nevin he was in great supportive company as he teed off.

As the round progressed the fight in Paddy began to grow and not to be out done by Dad he quietly began to hole the putts and knock up a great score.. With an eagle on the par 5 Paddy gained a little more confidence and kept the head until the end.

A fill of chicken wings and chips after his round Paddy headed back to the putting green for some cool down and putting practise. Then the announcements came. A nervous Paddy awaited the results and with Con Martin coming in 2nd with 39 points, could it be....could Paddy have won.....????

Playing off 11 hcap, 13 years of age and with a score of 40 points Paddy Copeland is this years Wednesday Captains Day Winner.

Congratulations to all the prize winners of the day. A big thank you to Wednesday Vice Captain Pat Nangle for help throughout the day and to Helen and her crew in the restaurant and bar for their hard work not just on the day but since they have joined us pre pandemic.

Thank you
